Virginia Tech Football : Three Things We Loved in 2017

The season is over, and the Hokies had some big highlights.

NCAA Football: Camping World Bowl-Oklahoma State vs Virginia Tech Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

The Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Camping World bowl, but there was plenty to celebrate in 2017. Here is our top three of most memorable moments from the 2017 campaign.

1.) The Hokies secure the Black Diamond Trophy at FedEx Field

There was so much build up for this game, and it delivered. The Hokies had a ton of question marks, including starting a freshman quarterback, and the West Virginia Mountaineers had some questions of their own. Transfer Will Grier had a good career at Florida, and Joshua Jackson was beginning his. It had been far too long for these traditional rivals to square off, and the Hokies emerging victorious made it that much sweeter.

#2 College GameDay returns to Blacksburg

We may catch some heat for this and we really don’t care. The Hokies fell to the Clemson Tigers that night, but the fact the Hokies were back in the national spotlight is a good thing. Clemson had superior depth and eventually wore down the Hokies, but the atmosphere was electric. It was great to see the Hokies back on the biggest stage in all of college football, even though the outcome was not what the fans wanted.

#3 Coach Fuente has the Hokies back in the top 20 in recruiting

There were so many questions heading into the first ever “early signing period”. The Hokies keep getting better, trailing the Miami Hurricanes in the Coastal, and the Clemson Tigers in the conference. This wasn’t immediately gratifying like a win, but speaks volumes about the future of the program. The staff is energized, and the noticeable improvement in talent on the field should make any Hokie hyper optimistic about the years to come.
