Virginia Tech traveled to Northern Virginia to recruit safety Devante Smith, and the Stonewall Jackson product signed with the Hokies as part of National Signing Day. Per 247, Smith is rated as a three-star safety, 77th at his position and the 30th best recruit in Virginia. His primary recruiter, Holmon Wiggins, did not have to heavily compete for Smith, as his only other offer was from Marshall.
Smith has good size for a safety, standing at 6-1, 185 pounds. Like most players signing their NLI’s today, Smith had already committed to the Hokies. Interestingly, he actually committed two summers ago in July of 2015.
Even though he is listed as a safety, Smith actually played a good bit of quarterback in high school, where he was able to display his above average athleticism. However, there is not a whole lot of tape out there to fully evaluate his ability to play safety.
Welcome to Blacksburg, Devante. I am sure you will find that this is home.
