The baseball world is one of length and patience. Baseball seasons are marathon affairs with ups and downs. They are often filled with rational expectations and understanding that players and teams often perform to average. It’s the players and teams that can exceed their averages for long enough that make winners.
Last evening, Virginia Tech performed far above their average, and in particular First Baseman Sam Fragale sprinted out of the 2017 Season gate with a power house display of hitting that netted him 7 RBI the bulk of which were generated on three ‘taters. Fragale just missed hitting Rahiem Cooper and Nick Anderson both put the ball out of the park.
Packy Naughton started the game and pitched a respectable 4.1 innings before being relieved by Nick Anderson for 2.2 innings. Graham Seitz and Chris Monaco finished out the game with an inning each.
It was a good start to a long campaign. The Spartans aren’t the Hurricanes or Wahoos, but every baseball game has its momentum, and every team is dangerous. Starting with a win is a good thing. It’d be nice to sweep the opening series to come home for that one day opener on Tuesday against the Marshall Thundering Herd.
