MJ Walker Announces Commitment to Florida State over Virginia Tech, Others

The Hokies miss out on fringe five-star guard MJ Walker.

Disappointment.

Fringe five-star wing MJ Walker was thought to be a Hokies lean for the last five weeks, but today he announced that he would enroll at Florida State for the upcoming season. Walker, who recently visited with the Bruins and Hokies, also showed interest with Georgia Tech and Ohio State. The Seminoles were not thought of as real contenders this late in the process, but with Walker, they have another talented recruiting class after one of the best ones in the country in 2016.

Virginia Tech currently boasts a guard-heavy roster. For a player as talented as Walker, there may not have been as many available minutes as he would have wanted, which was probably one of his deciding factors to commit elsewhere.

All hope is not lost for the Hokies, despite not landing the stud wing. With two consensus top-75 players in the country, this year’s cycle has provided one of the best classes in program history. The fact that Virginia Tech was in heavy contention for Walker bodes well for the future.

The Hokies are still in the mix for transfer prospect Juwan Durham, a talented sophomore who dealt with multiple injuries during and before his time in Connecticut. The 6-11 big man is scheduled to visit the Hokies this upcoming weekend.
