Virginia Tech Hokies Earn ACC’s Top Honors

The Fighting Gobbler's Earn Further Accolades From Their Track & Field Efforts!

The Virginia Tech Hokies Track and Field team earned three of the top annual awards given by the ACC.

Coach Dave Cianelli was awarded both the ACC Men's and Women's Outdoor Coach of the year for the 2016-2017 season.  Leading to the awards was a fantastic season which saw both the men and women of VT's outdoor track team win their respective ACC Championship.  Cianelli has been with the Hokies for sixteen seasons.  Including awards for indoor, outdoor, and cross country, these two recent honors are Coach Cianelli's 12th and 13th ACC Coach of the Year awards.  This was the first women's ACC title in nine years, and marked the second consecutive title for the men.  The year's performance resulted in 21 total student athletes (13 women's team, 8 men's team) qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship finals.  Congratulations Coach Cianelli and the men and women of VT's Outdoor Track and Field team!

Graduating senior, Irena Sediva, was named the ACC Women's Field Performer of the Year.  Ms. Sediva earned her second national championship, in the women's javelin, with a throw of 58.76m (192 feet, 9 inches).  Irena earned her initial national championship two years ago, but was unable to complete last season due to injury.  This year she was the only female ACC track and field student-athlete to win a national championship.  Congratulations to Ms. Sediva.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the Czech Republic native on the world stage in the near future!

Go Hokies!!!
