Virginia Tech Quarterback Battle Heating Up

It seems to be a three horse race early in fall camp.

The biggest question heading into fall camp is pretty easy. Who will be under center for Virginia Tech when they take the field? It’s time to break out the tea leaves people, as we dissect the latest Virginia Tech presser. There were three quarterbacks featured on the highlight reel: A.J. Bush, Hendon Hooker, and Joshua Jackson.

Reading between the lines, it seems it’s still wide open. AJ Bush comes to Blacksburg via Iowa Western Community College, and before that, Nebraska. He is a true dual threat, relying heavily on his feet. Joshua Jackson redshirted last season, and seemingly has a leg up having been in the program for over a year. In the above presser, he mentions having a great understanding of the system. Jackson was a 4* out of Michigan, and was an excellent dual threat as well. Hendon Hooker is a true freshman who enrolled early. The is buzz about his athleticism, but even he admits there is a significant adjustment coming from high school to the N.C.A.A.

Most folks have Jackson leading the polls, but there are still three weeks of practice left before the Hokies face West Virginia on September 3rd. It would not surprise me to see multiple QB’s in the opener, but don’t expect a named starter anytime soon. I like the idea of West Virginia preparing for different styles of quarterbacks, and postponing the decision will help that cause.
