Since 1936 the Associated Press has offered their opinion of which college football teams are the best in the nation. On Monday, the AP released their 2017 offering. After five years of being absent the Virginia Tech Hokies made their return to the preseason poll at No. 21! The last time VT’s football team was represented in the preseason AP Poll was back in 2012 when they started at No. 16.
The AP does provide VPI slightly more respect at No. 21 versus the USA Today Coaches Poll which places the Fighting Gobblers at No. 22. Interestingly the AP ranks the Hokies’ first opponent of the season, the West Virginia Mountaineers, at No. 22 (Coaches Poll No. 20). Up at the top one can find the usual suspects. The AP Poll and Coaches Poll list the same teams in the same order for the top five squads.
No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (1513 pts, 52 first place votes)
No 2. Ohio State Buckeyes (1414 pts, three first place votes)
No. 3 Florida State Seminoles (1396 pts, four first place votes)
No. 4 USC Trojans (1325 pts, two first place votes)
No. 5 Clemson Tigers (1201 pts)
Five ACC teams find themselves making appearances in the AP Poll.
No. 3 Florida State Seminoles
No. 5 Clemson Tigers
No. 16 Louisville Cardinals
No. 18 Miami-Florida Hurricanes
No. 21 Virginia Tech Hokies
Two other ACC teams received votes but did not crack the Top 25.
N.C. State Wolfpack – 26 points
Pittsburgh Panthers – 23 points
Best of luck to the Virginia Tech Hokies who will face three of the AP Poll Preseason Top 25 teams throughout their season!
