The Hokies will not comment any further on Beckett’s situation but this is clearly something that caught the team off-guard.
Beckett was second on the depth chart at mike linebacker and a key member on special teams. As a freshman last fall, he played in all 14 games and had played in both games this season. Beckett, at 5’10”, 225 pounds, was a hard-hitter whose style of play was perfect on special teams.
A standout at Indian River High School in Chesapeake, Beckett was an outstanding two-way player for the Braves, who, as a senior, compiled 131 tackles, 24 for loss, 12 sacks and seven forced fumbles.
It remains to be seen what Beckett’s future will be at Virginia Tech. However, from the wording of the statement, it does appear he is still a student. We here at Gobbler Country wish the best to Tavante and hope this situation is resolved soon in the best interest of all parties.
