Big win for the Virginia Tech Hokies today. We totally get it. We also must remain sane with a win over over one of the worst teams in college football. East Carolina scared us at first, and to quote the late Denny Green, “They are who we thought they were.”
#1 Cam Phillips/Josh Jackson just entered the Heisman conversation
It was a truly historic day offensively for Virginia Tech. Cam Phillips broke the single game receiving record. Josh Jackson threw for five touchdowns. Phillips totally owned the East Carolina Pirates all day. Jackson became the first quarterback to throw for 5 TD’s since, well, last year. Jerod Evans had 5 TD’s against the Boston College Eagles in 2016, and he didn’t even get an invite to New York. East Carolina’s defense is terrible and Justin Fuente and Brad Cornelson are just too smart. If either of the two Hokies put those type of numbers against quality competition consistently, call me.
#2 Our secondary isn’t that good. Look at West Virginia and the first half today.
Will Grier and the West Virginia Mountaineers put on an aerial display in the second half of week one. East Carolina exposed the secondary for some big plays in the first half against the Hokies. We all know Alexander was out. We get it. Here’s the facts: Will Grier is a damn good quarterback in that offense. We were caught out of position (which we corrected) against E.C.U.. It was only the third game of the season, so some mistakes are expected. Talk to me in week five when Clemson comes to town. That will be a true test.
#3 If the cards fall right, we could make the four team playoff.
You could literally say that about half the teams in Division 1 right now. Look, the Hokies need to win the Coastal, plain and simple. They do that, then a bunch of other opportunities present themselves. We caught a break not playing the Louisville Cardinals or Florida State Seminoles this year, but we still need to beat the Miami Hurricanes, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and North Carolina Tarheels. If we can get to the A.C.C. Championship, then we can chat about playoffs.
Great win for the team today people, but the season is only 1⁄4 complete. We will take care of the Old Dominion Monarchs, then get ready for Clemson.
