Good morning Hokie faithful! Well, the athletic year is almost over for Virginia Tech and we now enter the doldrums of collegiate sports… summer time! During this trying time we here at Gobbler Country will endeavor to distract you from the beach, barbecues, and brews that will surely punctuate your warmer months! Collected below you will find a smorgasbord of stories about our Hokies!
The Virginia Tech Hokies Win the Commonwealth Clash!
Let’s be honest the competition for the Commonwealth Cup has become a bit boring, which happens when VT’s winning streak is now only one year from getting its driver license learner’s permit. ‘Cause it has been 14 games in a row… get it? If the Hokies win next year then its 15 years in a row… IT’S PRETTY CLEVER YOU GUYS. Whatever…
Anyway, for the last four years the Commonwealth CLASH has tallied up the performance of the entire body of athletic effort between UVA and VT. The Hoos handedly took the first two years. Last year was a tie but ended up being awarded to VPI due to the Hokies’ four team ACC Championships. This year the Hokies won outright. Check out the Commonwealth Clash homepage for all the details!
Virginia Tech Freshmen Earns Spot on 2018 Junior World Team
The Hokies are sending an enrolled student athlete to the Junior World Team. Trials were held at Rochester, Minnesota this past week. Redshirt Freshmen, Mekhi Lewis unseated an All-American, and many others, on his way to locking up the 74kg spot. Lewis will represent the USA (and VT) during the Junior World Championships in Slovakia this September! Congratulations Mekhi, and best of luck!
Representing the USA on this year’s Junior World Team at 74KG is Mekhi Lewis❗️

Kickoff Times for VT’s First Three 2018 Football Games Released
We already knew that VT was kicking off next season in Tallahassee against the Florida State Seminoles, but now we know WHEN! Kickoff against those pesky ‘Noles and new head coach, Willie Taggart, will be at 8PM Eastern on 03 SEP 2018. The game will be televised by ESPN! Five days later (ack! Short week!) VT opens their home slate against William and Mary at 2PM Eastern. This game will be… streamed on ACC Network Extra. The East Carolina Pirates attempt to invade Lane Stadium a week later at 1220PM Eastern and will be televised on the ACC Network.
People Are High on Brandon Facyson
The official site of the Los Angeles Chargers recently published an article opining that Facyson might be quite the steal. Draft pundits felt that Brandon was a near lock on draft day two. Incredulously he fell completely out of the draft, likely due to concerns surrounding his history of injuries. He was quickly snapped up as an Undrafted Rookie Free Agent by the Chargers. Check out the article for more regarding Mr. Facyson!
The Chargers grabbed a cornerback as a undrafted free agent. This guy (Brandon Facyson) was supposed to be selected in the first 3 rounds in this years draft but got hammered with injuries that year. Crazy to think that because this secondary is already loaded

This past weekend the official Twitter account of VT’s football team reminded us of how exciting the efforts of these young men are. Originally posted back in December, if you haven’t had a chance to see it before, check it out below.
