Well it wasn’t like this is a big surprise. It looks like Hendon Hooker is making his way to the exit.
— Hendon Hooker (@HenBoss2) January 30, 2019
Hooker didn’t dress out for the Military Bowl, which meant that Quincy Patterson was Ryan Willis’s backup for the game.
Hooker’s big highlight was his break away QB sweep touchdown, and his few appearances were extremely limited since he was 3 on the depth chart. It seems that remained the same number as the season wore on, JJ went down with the broken leg, and Ryan Willis took over as the starter. Patterson just ended up bubbling into the #2 position behind Willis, and thankfully the staff never had to burn his red shirt.
So, now the Hokies have cleared the Quarterback decks with the obvious #1 - Senior Ryan Willis and #2 - Redshirt Freshman Quincy Patterson for the 2019 season.
Look for the entire quarterback controversy angle for the Spring Game to go by the wayside. It also clears the boards for a long and healthy build of Patterson’s skills and play handling. It’s looking more and more like he’s “the guy” for 2020.
Now, maybe with two QBs of similar skill sets, size, and on-field capabilities we’ll see some consistent game to game strategic and tactical game planning, and play calling.
This is only surprising in the length of time that it took to happen.
Good Luck young Mr. Hooker. We hope that you find a team and system that will match your skills and talent. Thanks for being a Hokie.
Looks like things are going to get close to settling down, now.
