Virginia Tech football: The countdown begins Friday

The start of the season is exactly 100 days away.

Coach Fuente channeling Bill Belichick?

We’ve reached a point in the year where there isn’t much going on in college sports. Baseball is wrapping up, spring practice for football is in the rearview mirror and the only basketball talk is about recruiting.

Well, as we near Memorial Day and the calendar turning to June, we realize football season is just over two months away at that point. So, we decided it is never too early to start looking ahead to football season and beginning tomorrow, Thursday, May 24, we will officially be 99 days away from the beginning of the 2019 college football season.

On that day, the Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College in the season opener.

Starting Thursday, over the next few months, we will do our best to give you a reminder of how many days it is until August 31. This isn’t just any countdown, though, as each day we will give you a former Hokie great by his number at Virginia Tech, for our countdown. For instance, if there is one day until the beginning of the season, we will use the number one and that player could be Macho Harris.

It’s a fun exercise that could get us through a few boring months without college sports and give Hokie Nation a nice walk down memory lane. Our countdown isn’t necessarily going to be who was the greatest player to ever wear that number, but more about a memorable player who wore that number for the Hokies.

This isn’t science and should be fun for discussion and we encourage you guys to comment with your own suggestions either on our posts, on our Facebook page or on the Gobbler Country Twitter page.

As of now, we have 101 days, Hokies.
