The Patriots of Fairfax and Prince William County’s George Mason University made the trip out I-66 and down I-81 (4 hours, roughly) to play baseball in Blacksburg, today. The Hokie Softball team took the trip to NOVA to play and blew the Patriot doors off with a big 12-1 win in a shortened game. The baseball team didn’t score that many points, and baseball rules say that you play a minimum of 8 1⁄2 innings regardless of the score. So the Virginia Tech Hokie Pitch by committee staff took to the mound at 4:00 pm and 2 innings at a time told their cousins at GMU that they were indeed visiting and 2020 hasn’t been a good time for visitors to English Field.
Hokies vs. GMU Patriots - March 11
Ryan Metz (W, 1-0) started the Hokies off with a solid two goose eggs up on the scoreboard. Henry Weycker put in his two innings with a similar result. Jaison Heard gave up one earned run in his 2 innings, and then Peyton Alford went back to zeros for his single inning. Peter Sakellaris registered a scorless 8th, and then Zach Brzykcy broke the string and coughed up 2 runs in the top of the 9th. Until then, Tech had steadily built up a lead with several innings of small ball, never scoring more than the 2 runs that they opened with in any one inning. Carson Taylor did hit a solo tater in the 3rd inning, after having singled in the 1st, and then he doubled in the 5th (eventually he scored the only run for the Hokies in that inning.)
It was a nice solid performance and a good win for an extra game during the week. Friday the Hokies take on the visiting Miami Hurricanes as we return to regular ACC weekend play. We’ll see if the English Field 2020 win streak stays intact.
