You know college football is on the horizon when the top awards release its individual watch lists before fall camp starts. Of course, 2020 is something like we’ve never seen before and we don’t even know if we are going to have a season — or what it will look like if we do.
The Virginia Tech Hokies were expected to have a good team in 2020, with as many as 18 starters returning. So, it’s no surprise to see some Hokies receive some love on a national level.
On Monday, the Butkus Award named its watch list ahead of the season and one prominent Hokie made the list.
Senior linebacker Rayshard Ashby, the 5-foot-10, 237-pound captain from Chesterfield, is on the list.
Last season, Ashby led the ACC with 120 tackles. He also finished with 17.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He was a second-team All-ACC selection despite winning the conference’s “linebacker of the week” award on five occasions.
Bud Foster couldn’t contain his excitement upon seeing Ashby’s name.
If we have football in 2020, expect Ashby to have another banner year leading Virginia Tech’s defense in the post-Foster era.
