The Hokies are back in action this weekend! While many will be focused on college football, and thinking about the NC State game delay, VT soccer gets rolling with a clash against UVA. The Men’s and Women’s 2020 schedules are out, featuring differing formats, but expect both squads to be in post-season contention.
Men’s Schedule
It’ll be an extremely truncated season as the ACC limits travel and matches ahead of an early conference tournament. Each team will have six regular season games, three at home and three on the road. The ACC has been split into two groups (North and South), with VT in the North with UVA, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Syracuse, & Louisville. The South consists of schools from the Carolinas - UNC, Duke, NC State, Clemson & Wake Forest. (Note: Boston College opted out of playing in 2020).
- 10/3 - UVA (home)
- 10/10 - Pittsburgh (away)
- 10/16 - Notre Dame (home)
- 10/24 - Syracuse (home)
- 10/30 - Louisville (away)
- 11/6 - UVA (away)
Considering eight schools (of the 11) make the ACC Tournament, which will take place between November 15th and 22nd, the Hokies will be extremely disappointed if they miss out. After earning a #10 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament, finishing ahead of just two schools in group play seems feasible. Even if they do have to play UVA twice.
Women’s Schedule
Oddly, the two teams have different schedule sizes and formats. The women’s side will play 12 matches, but just eight of them will count towards the conference standings despite playing ACC schools 11 times. Two games against UVA, one versus Duke and the only out-of-conference match against Navy won’t count towards post-season contention. (Note: NC State’s women’s team has opted out of the 2020 season.)
- 9/12 - UVA (away)
- 9/17 - Clemson (away)
- 9/20 - UNC (away)
- 9/25 - UVA (home)
- 10/1 - Florida State (home)
- 10/4 - Pittsburgh (home)
- 10/9 - Duke (away)
- 10/15 - Miami (home)
- 10/18 - Louisville (home)
- 10/24 - Navy (home)
- 10/29 - Wake Forest (away)
Once again the top eight will make the ACC tournament, but the women’s side will feature a single table rather than two grouped regions. Tech has a difficult opening stretch with three road games in a row, and considering the additional COVID-19 travel conditions. However, expect the Hokies to be in contention to make the 8-team post-season.
