Spring is in the air, and Virginia Tech baseball is off to a fantastic start to the 2021 season. After taking two out of three games against North Carolina, the Hokies have moved up to No. 12 in the latest Baseball America top 25.
The series win over North Carolina this weekend was the first Virginia Tech had defeated UNC in a series since the Hokies joined the ACC back in 2004. That is major progress. Keep in mind; the Hokies also took two out of three against then-No. 6 Miami in February.
Now 7-2 on the season, Virginia Tech begins a two-game series against VCU on Tuesday. The series will take place in Blacksburg, where the Hokies are 5-1.
The Hokies aren’t just moving up in the Baseball America poll but also several other polls. Tech is now No. 19 in the latest USA TODAY coaches poll.

Head coach John Szefc is one of the more underrated coaches in all of college baseball. After struggling in his first two seasons in Blacksburg, Szefc had the Hokies at 11-5 in 2020 when COVID-19 hit and shut things down.
Now is a perfect time to get behind this program. Good things are happening in Blacksburg. Mike Young and Kenny Brooks have the men’s and women’s basketball teams in a good position; the wrestling program is one of the best, etc. And, with fans allowed at English Field, you can slowly start to feel things going back to normal — or at least a new normal.
Congratulations to Coach Szefc and Virginia Tech baseball team. This should be a fun spring.
