Virginia Tech junior pitcher Keely Rochard was outstanding again, allowing just two runs to the mighty Bruins. She took a perfect game into the fifth inning and struck out 12 Bruins.
Offensively, freshman Cameron Fagan led the Hokies with three hits. She was one of three Hokies with multiple hits as Kelsey Bennett and Kelsey Brown each had two hits.
Tech got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Bennett hit a two-run triple that plated two runs. It was a lead Virginia Tech would never relinquish.
The Hokies would plate two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead. UCLA would get both of its runs in the fifth. However, the Hokies would add an insurance run in the seventh for the decisive score.
The Hokies are now one win away from their second appearance in the College World Series. Virginia Tech’s only previous appearance in the World Series was back in 2008.
Friday’s Game 2 begins at 9:30 p.m. ET. You can watch live on ESPN2.
Go Hokies!!
