Pro Football Focus is best known for the work it does with the NFL. In recent years, PFF has taken a more active role in college football, too.

Now, with the season less than two months away, PFF has ranked every FBS college football team from 1 to 130. As you might expect, the Alabama Crimson Tide come in at No. 1 with Clemson at No. 2. Ohio State, Georgia and Oklahoma make up the rest of the top five.

So, where are the Virginia Tech Hokies?

PFF ranks the Hokies as the No. 28 team in the country entering 2021.

I can actually get behind that ranking. You could argue that it may be a bit too high. The Hokies are the No. 5 ACC team behind Clemson, North Carolina, Miami and Pitt. Coincidentally enough, the Hokies were 0-4 against the aforementioned teams in 2020.

The Hokies and Tar Heels had one of the more exciting games in the league last season, while VT’s loss to Pitt was embarrassing. Something about the Hokies going to Pittsburgh. Tech blew the game against Miami while it hung with Clemson until the second half.

Ahead of the 2021 season, I would rank Virginia Tech among the top 35-40 teams. I worry about the quarterback position. I believe Braxton Burmeister can play, but if he is injured — and he was banged up often last season — the Hokies will be in trouble.

PFF has the Tar Heels ranked No. 11. The Hokies and Heels open the season on Friday, Sept. 3, at Lane Stadium.
