It’s been a good couple of weeks for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry. As Pry and the Hokies look to finish strong ahead of the early signing period for high school recruits, Pry and his staff have been busy hosting potential transfers. The transfer portal has been busy since it opened earlier this month. On Monday, Virginia Tech landed its first potential starter in offensive tackle Montavious Cunningham, formerly of Georgia State.

However, where the Hokies have excelled since the end of the regular season is retaining their own. We live in an era now where coaches must recruit their own roster annually. The transfer portal means it’s open season for other teams to poach your best players. And for Virginia Tech, Pry and his staff, working with VT’s competitive NIL, they’ve done a terrific job in keeping their best players.

Wide receivers Da’Quan Felton, Jaylin Lane, Ali Jennings and Stephen Gosnell are all coming back. Quarterback Kyron Drones announced he was returning. Defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland and defensive tackle Josh Fuga will be back. There’s confidence that running back Bhayshul Tuten will return, too.

On Thursday evening, Tech received more good news when All-American cornerback Dorian Strong announced he was returning for a fifth season in Blacksburg.

This is massive news for the Hokies. And much like with Tuten, the Hokies are confident that Strong’s fellow cornerback, Mansoor Delane, will be back as well. Delane had a tweet this week that hinted at his return.

As for Strong, he’s developed into a fantastic college player. He was one of the nation’s top cornerbacks in 2023, holding opposing receivers to just nine receptions all season, according to Pro Football Focus, and intercepting three passes. The 6-0, 182-pound redshirt from Upper Marlboro, Md., junior bounced back this season after an injury-prone 2022 season.

Now, we await Tuten and Delane’s announcements.

The Hokies have another busy weekend in Blacksburg, hosting several transfers. If all goes well, Tech will add at least one more offensive lineman to join Cunningham and a couple of defensive tackles and a linebacker to a defense that could be really good in 2024.
