Virginia Tech basketball: Lynn Kidd is in some elite company this season

Lynn Kidd was unstoppable in Virginia Tech’s latest win.

The Virginia Tech Hokies won their fourth consecutive game Thursday with a 77-55 win over American University to improve to 9-3 on the season.

Junior point guard Sean Pedulla missed his second game out of the last three, and freshman Brandon Rechsteiner replaced him in the lineup. Rechsteiner delivered, dishing out a career-high 11 assists in 30 minutes of action.

However, the big story of the night was senior center Lynn Kidd. Kidd scored a career-high 31 points and also led the Hokies with 11 rebounds. Kidd’s 31 points came on a 14 of 15 performance from the field. He also made all three of his free-throw attempts.

It was Kidd’s fourth double-double of the season, and he’s now averaging 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Kidd averaged five points and three rebounds per game last season.

Even more impressive from Kidd, he’s shooting 70.9% from the field and 86.7% percent from the free-throw line. Too often, when players shoot such a high percentage from the floor, they don’t score a lot. And many of their points come on dunks. While Kidd has plenty of dunks, he also has a much-improved jump shot.

The national media is paying attention to Virginia Tech’s big man.

And the analytics are impressive for Kidd, too.

According to X User @CBBAnalytics, Kidd is ranked second nationally in “true shooting percentage” for players averaging at least 10 points per game. Per CBB Analytics, Kidd’s true shooting percentage is 76.9%.

Kidd may be college basketball’s most improved player and at the current rate, should be a lock for the All-ACC first team. Of course, there is a long way to go before that becomes a reality.

The Hokies return to action next Saturday against Wake Forest, and every game is an ACC game for the remainder of the season.
