The Hokies add an important piece to the 2015 recruiting class.

Word broke Saturday evening that Virginia Tech had secured the commitment of Kerry Blackshear Jr. He's the first commitment in Tech's 2015 recruiting class, the second for Buzz Williams in Blacksburg.

Blackshear is a 6'8", 220-pound power forward from Orlando, FL. He's rated a four-star prospect, the No. 75 overall recruit and No. 21 power forward by 247Sports.

He chose the Hokies over scholarship offers from SMU, Vanderbilt, Clemson and Kansas State among many others.

Blackshear is an active defender who is athletic enough to rotate and extend on the perimeter. He uses his size effectively to alter shots and has the frame to add enough weight to become a significant presence in the post. Adding strength will be the key to realizing his full potential against ACC bigs.

On offense, he shows the ability to dribble and drive as well as getting good position in the post.

The Hokies desperately needed to land a recruit like Blackshear with the dwindling number of post players on Tech's roster. Joey van Zegeren and JUCO transfer Shane Henry will both be seniors when Kerry steps on campus and transfer Zach LeDay will be a junior.

Buzz likes his wing players but building depth in the post is a major priority.

Williams and his staff have made a significant effort to open two potentially lucrative recruiting pipelines, working both the Boo Williams EYBL club and Florida high schools very hard since arriving in Blacksburg. The Florida emphasis is likely a reflection of assistant Steve Roccaforte's connections from his time on the staff at South Florida.

Florida has long been a hotbed of athletic talent and Buzz and Co. have tried to tap into that talent by pursuing a number of targets like Blackshear, Keith Stone and Jeantal Cylla.

Boo Williams is one of the premier EYBL programs located in the hotbed of Virginia talent in Hampton. Buzz has been beating the pavement with regularity at EYBL and high school recruiting events in an effort to raise Tech's profile in the eyes of top players like the heavily recruited Chris Clarke.

The early results continue to be impressive with Buzz reeling in another strong recruit.

Stay tuned to Gobbler Country for complete Hokie basketball recruiting coverage.

A look at a recent offer, updates on some old ones and the continued efforts of Buzz Williams to infuse Tech's roster with top talent.

We've been following Tech's recruitment of Manassas (Va.) product Justin Robinson for some time, and his decision is finally close at hand.

The 6'1", 170-pound point guard plays for St. James School as well as the Boo Williams EYBL club. 247Sports ranks him as the 24th best point guard and 140th player overall in the nation as well as the No. 3 player in Maryland.

The Hokies are among the final four schools still in the running for Robinson's services. Tech, Maryland, Providence and UNLV are the remaining contenders with the Hokies heavily favored among 247's experts.

Virginia Tech already received an unofficial visit from Justin at the beginning of June and an official visit August 30.

Robinson will take an official visit to UNLV on October 3. before officially announcing his decision October 12.

The Hokies are also still in the running for 6'5" Virginia Beach shooting guard Chris Clarke.

Clarke is rated the No.1 player in Virginia by 247Sports and the 41st best player in the nation. The four-star prospect narrowed his list of suitors to seven in August. Along with Tech he's still considering offers from Connecticut, Florida, Iowa State, Tennessee, Creighton and Minnesota.

Clark visited Blacksburg September 26 and is expecting a visit from the Tech coaches at his school.

Worthem transferred to Indian Hills Community College after one season at Robert Morris University. Morris left after he and three other members of the basketball team were suspended for one year by the university for undisclosed reasons.

A university spokesman would say only that the matter, "carries a mandatory one year suspension from Robert Morris" according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. No criminal charges were filed.

That sounds like a red flag to many, but Williams has a successful track record of bringing kids with tough backgrounds into his program. The 6'6" swingman Worthem averaged 8.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in his only season as a starter at Robert Morris.

The Philadelphia native will have two years of eligibility remaining after his season at Indian Hills CC.

As a junior at L.C. Bird, Williams averaged 21.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He was also very active on the defensive end with 2.7 steals and a block per contest. He was also a key contributor to the Boo Williams squad in the Nike EYBL.

At 6'3" 175-pounds Williams still has some room to mature physically, though I think he already has the look of a D-1 player more than many prospects at this stage. The thing that most impressed me about his game is his vision and passing in transition. He's very confident running the break and I think he has a good enough handle that he could play some point guard if asked.

Williams also shoots the ball extremely well, making 49% of his shots from the field and knocking down 80% of his free throw attempts last season.

He currently ranks 83rd in the ESPN100 where he's listed as the No. 2 player in Virginia.

It's perfectly fair to wonder if the Hokies stand a chance with a prospect still considering Georgetown, Indiana and North Carolina among others but there are a few interesting variables that might benefit Tech.

A kid like Williams from the Richmond area might like to stay in state which would pit the Hokies against VCU. That's still a tall order given where the programs are currently, but it's more manageable than the alternative competitors. It would also serve as a preview of Shaka Smart Vs. Buzz Williams which I think will be very common in the next few years.

The head coach at L.C. Bird is former Hokie point guard Troy Manns who took over the program in 2011. No good head coach would overtly steer a kid to his alma mater, but it's nice to know at least one person in Williams' inner circle has Hokie leanings and an understanding of what it's like to play basketball in Blacksburg.

Stone is a 6'7", 240-pounder listed at small forward. He plays for Zion Lutheran Christian School in Deerfield Beach, FL where he helped lead the Lions to a 21-7 record during his junior season.

His highlights show a myriad of mid-range pull up shots extending to three point range. Whether it's a straight pull-up or a turn around jumper, Stone looks very comfortable on the offensive end. He also finishes at the rim in transition with an ease that belies his 240 pounds.

To me, he looks kind of skinny for that weight which leads me to believe he could stand to put on a few pounds without losing too much athleticism. As it stand he's...Keith Stone "Light". With some added strength, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see him capable of fighting in the paint at power forward. He already plays a physical game so it probably wouldn't be a huge transition.

Tech has some ground to make up here but there's plenty of time to curry favor with the rising junior.

Brown may be the most talented player I've looked at among the recent offers and he already boasts a fairly polished game. He shoots with confidence from all over the court, has a great handle of the basketball and shows tremendous athleticism at both ends of the court. He routinely blocks shots on defense and finishes above the rim on offense.

His profile will only continue to increase if he keeps putting on strong showings like the one he just had at the Peach Jam in Augusta, Georgia—easily the most delicious name of the EYBL events.

Brown helped his Boston Area Basketball Club take down Boo Williams among others at the Peach Jam. He's shown he can score in bunches against top flight competition and the buzz surrounding his recruitment is palpable.

He's a Boston area native, but I don't think that necessarily gives the New England schools like Boston College or Providence any particular advantage in his recruitment. He appears destined to be the kind of high major recruit that can go anywhere he likes.

Tech continues to plan for the future and a big physical guard with tremendous athleticism like Brown clearly fits the mold of a Buzz Williams player. The new staff is aiming high with all targets which is certainly a good sign for the program. Now, they just have to reel a few in.

Moyer is having a big summer, improving from a three star recruit to a four star on 247Sports and and coming in at number 90 in the latest Rivals100 ranking. He's garnering lots of attention from programs all across the country with more than 20 official scholarship offers and a few high profile unofficial visits including a recent trip to Ohio State.

Wisconsin and Butler are among the frontrunners at this point, but things change constantly in recruiting especially with so much time remaining in the process.

The 210-pound forward hails from Columbus, Ohio where he plays for Lincoln High School and VCC Ohio Warriors in AAU hoops.

Moyer has grown from a tall guard/wing player as a high school freshman to a taller, athletic kid who with some added bulk could be capable of playing power forward. He moves well and has a very good handle on the ball for someone his size and shows some good passing skills in transition. He even runs point in some of the above video.

It's too early to say if the Hokies will be a major player in this recruitment, but Tech has plenty to sell as Moyer would definitely have a crack at significant early playing time in one of the premiere conferences in college basketball.

Here he is with one of his AAU teammates Seth Towns on an unofficial visit to Blacksburg last fall.

As we profiled recently, Adel was considering Tech to the point where he scheduled a visit to Blacksburg. Still, the recruiting ability of Buzz Williams wasn't enough to overcome the draw of playing for Louisville and Rick Pitino.

We also reported Ben Emelogu's decision to transfer from Virginia Tech. It didn't take long for him to come to the decision to head back to Texas and enroll at SMU.

As Ben aluded to in that quote, SMU was among the schools recruiting him out of high school so it makes a lot of sense. It's always frustrating for Tech fans to see our guys head elsewhere (and thrive) but still, we wish the best of luck to Ben. I have a feeling he'll be a star in the Lone Star State.
